What is a C-Reactive Protein test?
C-Reactive Protein (CRP) Blood Test measures a type of protein that binds with a sugar called C-polysaccharide, which is usually found in the bacterial cell wall. CRP tests are used in conjunction with other tests, like lipid profile, to predict an individual’s risk of developing cardiovascular diseases and/or inflammatory conditions.
Who should get this test?
CRP test may be ordered to determine a person’s risk for heart disease or stroke. Doctors may also order a CRP test after surgery to check for signs of post-surgical infection. They also might use it to monitor inflammatory diseases, including:
- Pelvic inflammatory disease
- Inflammatory bowel disease
- Arthritis and autoimmune diseases, such as lupus
