What is a Hair Loss Panel?

Hair loss, also called alopecia, is a disorder caused by an interruption in the body’s cycle of hair production. Hair loss can occur anywhere on the body, but most commonly affects the scalp. Hair Loss Panel is a blood test which may be used to evaluate and assess causes of hair loss whether it is genetic, medical, or environmental.

This panel contains the following tests:

Androstenedione: used to evaluate the function of the adrenal gland, the ovaries or the testicles as well as the production of hormones related to the development of male sex organs and physical characteristics (androgens).

Complete Blood Count (CBC): measures the number and types of cells in your blood. Your blood contains red blood cells (RBC), white blood cells (WBC), and platelets.

Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP): a series of blood test which measures a patient’s glucose and electrolyte levels, fluid balance, kidney, and liver function.

DHEA-Sulfate:  is an androgen hormone that measures the function of the adrenal gland. DHEA-S declines with age. Low levels of DHEA-S can result in low libido, low energy, and poor sleep. Excessively high levels of this hormone can cause a deeper voice, acne, and baldness.

Ferritin Level: moderates levels of the protein associated with the amount of iron stored in the body. A test measures the amount of ferritin in the blood usually to diagnose iron deficiency anemia.

Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH):  stimulates the ovaries to produce the follicle. A high FSH level (generally over 11) suggests that the follicles are not responding as well as they should be to FSH stimulation

Iron and TIBC: checks for levels of Iron and TIBC in the blood. Iron is an important component of hemoglobin, a protein that helps bind and releases oxygen during blood circulation. TIBC is often used to help determine abnormalities in iron levels, such as a deficiency or overload.

Luteinizing Hormone: a hormone associated with reproduction and stimulation of the release of an egg from the ovary (ovulation) in women and testosterone production in men, has several uses. In both women and men, LH is often used in conjunction with other tests (FSH, testosterone, estradiol and progesterone).

Prolactin: is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland and its primary role is to help initiate and maintain breast milk production in pregnant and nursing women. A prolactin test measures the levels of prolactin in the body.

Testosterone: is a blood test that measures the levels of testosterone in the body. In males, it may be ordered to assist in diagnosing erectile dysfunction, infertility, and other conditions. The test checks free and total testosterone.

Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH): is used to assess thyroid function or to diagnose thyroid disorders. TSH is a hormone that regulates the production of thyroid hormones (T3 and T4).

Vitamin B-12 Level: is a blood test which is used to assess B12 levels in the blood. Vitamin B-12 is involved in brain and nerve functioning, blood cell production.

These tests can at the very least eliminate the possibility of certain medical disorders causing your hair loss and perhaps aid in finding the actual cause.

When will I receive my results?

Once completed, you will receive your results within 3-5 business days in your LabFinder portal.
