Prostate Ultrasound

What is a Prostate Ultrasound?

Ultrasound of the prostate uses sound waves to produce pictures of a man’s prostate gland and to help diagnose symptoms such as difficulty urinating or an elevated blood test result. It’s also used to investigate a nodule found during a rectal exam, detect abnormalities, and determine whether the gland is enlarged.

Who should get a Prostate Ultrasound?

An Ultrasound of Prostate is usually ordered by doctors if you have these indications:

  1. tendon tears, or tendinitis of the rotator cuff in the shoulder, Achilles tendon in the ankle and other tendons throughout the body
  2. muscle tears, masses or fluid collections
  3. ligament sprains or tears
  4. inflammation or fluid (effusions) within the bursae and joints
  5. early changes of rheumatoid arthritis
  6. nerve entrapments such as carpal tunnel syndrome
  7. benign and malignant soft tissue tumors
  8. ganglion cysts
  9. hernias
  10. foreign bodies in the soft tissues (such as splinters or glass)

Is there radiation involved?

No. Unlike X-ray imaging, there is no ionizing radiation exposure associated with ultrasound imaging.
