What is a Vitamin C Level test?

Vitamin C Level blood test is used to help diagnose vitamin C deficiency. Blood levels of vitamin C are used to check for nutritional, immune, and cardiovascular status. Low values occur in scurvy, malabsorption syndromes, inflammatory bowel disease, alcoholism, pregnancy, hyperthyroidism, and kidney failure. Smokers have also been shown to have lower levels than non-smokers.

The recommended daily intake of vitamin C are as follows:

  • Children aged 1-10 years need 30 mg of vitamin C per day
  • Children aged 11-14 years need 35 mg of vitamin C per day
  • Children over the age of 15 years and adults need 40 mg per day

Who should get this test?

A vitamin C test may be ordered when a person has signs that suggest a vitamin C deficiency or has general malnutrition. These signs and symptoms include:

  • Tiredness and weakness
  • Muscle and joint pains
  • Easy bruising
  • Spots that look like tiny, red-blue bruises on your skin
  • Dry skin
  • Splitting hair
  • Swelling and discoloration of your gums
  • Sudden and unexpected bleeding from your gums
  • Nosebleeds
  • Poor healing of wounds
  • Problems fighting infections
  • Bleeding into joints, causing severe joint pains
  • Changes in your bones
  • Tooth loss
  • Weight loss

Elevated Vitamin C Levels:

  • Toxic side effects – diarrhea

  Decreased Vitamin C Levels:

  • Scurvy
