A Rib X-ray uses a small dose of radiation to make pictures of the bones in your chest. People also call it a rib series, rib radiograph, or X-ray of the ribs. If your doctor ordered this study, you can book at participating imaging centers on LabFinder.
This study, sometimes called a rib series or rib radiograph, takes quick pictures of the ribs. It helps find broken ribs, bone changes, or problems after an injury, and can show issues like air or fluid around the lungs linked to rib injuries.
Common reasons: chest pain after a fall or hit to the chest, trouble taking a deep breath after an injury, a tender spot on one rib, a snap or crack sound at the time of injury, or your clinician needs to check healing after a known fracture.
You will check in and remove necklaces, piercings, or clothing with metal near the chest. The technologist will help you stand or lie in a few positions. You may be asked to take a deep breath and hold still for a few seconds while each picture is taken. Most visits take about 15 to 30 minutes at the center.
This exam is usually safe for most people. It does not use radiation unless noted for this test. Tell the team about any implants, devices, or possible pregnancy so they can confirm safety. If contrast is recommended, the staff will review allergy history and kidney checks as needed. This test uses a small amount of X-ray radiation, so tell the team if you are or might be pregnant.
Clothing and metal: wear comfy clothes and remove metal items from the chest area. Food and drink: you can usually eat and drink as normal. Health check: tell the team if you are or might be pregnant or if you have trouble standing. Paperwork: bring a photo ID, insurance card, and your doctor’s order. Follow any extra instructions from your doctor or the center.
Rib fractures, bruised ribs after trauma, bone infections, bone tumors or lesions, air around the lung after injury, and fluid around the lungs after a hit to the chest. Results are read in context. Your doctor will review the images along with your history and symptoms before suggesting next steps.
