What is a Brain-Natriuretic Peptide (BNP)?

Brain-Natriuretic Peptide (BNP) is an amino acid polypeptide secreted into the bloodstream by the ventricles of the heart, typically in response to excessive stretching of heart muscle cells (cardiomyocytes). When the heart must work harder than usual over a long period of time, it will release more BNP into the blood.

A BNP blood test will measure the amount of amino acid secreted in the blood. Normally, the amount of BNP present in the blood are low. Elevated BNP levels are typically observed in people with various forms of heart failure and hypertrophy. The test can be used to check the severity of heart failure.

Your doctor might order this test if the patient presents with difficulty breathing and swelling in the arms or legs or high pressure in the heart. The BNP test may also be ordered to check the response to treatment for heart failure.
